Have You Heard Summer Lately?

There is something I never want to become numb to.

The fact that within five minutes of leaving our house, Matt and I can be wandering beneath a canopy of trees. A few minutes more, and we’re in the Wissahickon—2,000 acres of woods, winding trails, and a river that somehow always convinces me to breathe a little slower.

This time of year, the soundtrack is especially rich. The birds seem louder. The cicadas more insistent. Leaves rustle overhead while the creek gargles alongside the trail. It’s funny—we often walk through it without really hearing it.

Not because we aren’t listening, but because we’ve become so accustomed to it.

I think that’s why I’m so excited for this Friday’s gathering at MWL.

For the first time in a while, we’re welcoming a live performance into the studio, and this one feels less like a concert and more like an invitation. The Phasing Series: A Seasonal Deep Listening Experience with local Mt. Airy sound artist Sohme weaves long-form ambient music together with seasonal field recordings from the Wissahickon.

For one hour, we’ll simply listen.

Not to accomplish anything.
Not to optimize ourselves.
Not even to meditate “well.”

Just to notice.

To hear familiar sounds as if they’re brand new. To remember that paying attention is its own kind of practice.

If you’ve been craving an evening that asks nothing of you except your presence, I’d love to have you join us.

Keep summering, and move with love.

Xoxo,
Holly
